Barnard Family Ministry History - The Call

Walter Mason Barnard and wife, Pauline Geraldine Saffer met in Shawneetown, IL. They were married August 1, 1931. Walter from Kentucky, Pauline from Illinois. Both answered the call of the Lord just two weeks after their marriage. It was at an old fashion Tent Revival Meeting being held in Pontiac, MI.,the city they moved to after their marriage. The call for ministry came soon after. First was the Barnard Evangelistic Team comprised of Walter on guitar, his brothers, James Spencer Barnardon violin and Harry Barnard on drums.(Picture at left - Walter in dark suit holding guitar, James Spencer viioln and Harry Barnard drums standing right.)

Walter Mason Barnard and wife Pauline launched into full time ministry in the middle of the Great Depression. Walter quit his job in 1935 as a foremen at General Motors, accepting the position of pastor of a small church in Lake Odessa, MI. Next came the call to Mt. Vernon, IL. The third church was Flint, MI. Five ladies and 2 men had started meeting in a home and were looking for a pastor. Walter and Pauline answered again. Soon a thriving new church developed called Faith Tabernacle.. In all, they pastored eleven churches in MI, IL and California. Walter was a leader in broadcasting a local church service on weekly radio. Photo at right shows Walter, Pauline on his left holding their first son, Gerald Grant Barnard. The name Grant, was for Pauline's father, Grant Saffer, back in Shaweneetown, IL
